[OB] My $.02 's worth. (Scott Stewart)

Has anyone that has one of the USB2 cards working on an OB800 had any luck
getting an external HDD or thumbdrive to work off it? I've only had luck
with PCMCIA based HDD kits or externally powered larger HDDs. I also
couldn't get a USB keyboard/mouse to work. Anybody had any luck there? I
fired up my old 425 the other day with 4 rechargables. Works great but now
I'm back to my old reliable 530 because I need the enhanced mode for the
beloved Ecco Pro. I remember posting a software problem to another list and
some wit wrote back that if I liked the b/w obs his kids had an
etch-a-sketch I could have. But the other day I was sitting out on the deck
in the full sun getting some work done and reading a PDF. Still useful
after all these years! Scott Stewart

Just a comment on the USB adapters - the OB800 has a cardbus slot and the
pcmcia USB 2.0 adapters that are common on ebay will work in them. I was
never able to find a pcmcia to usb adapter that would work on the 425/430
models.

Actually the 133mhz and 166mhz 800CT models support CardBus.

The 100Mhz 800 model does not support CardBus.

Ta Da!!, I revived the OB425's using fresh double AA's overnight. Thank you
all for your suggestions. This list, even in its moribund phase, gets
things done. Thank you all.

Hi

The standard technique for radio hams when confronted with an old piece of
equipment with valves (tubes) is to use a Variac and connect it to low
voltage for a day or two, then increase the voltage slowly to full value.

This gives old, dry electrolyctic capacitors time to "re-form" - which is
analogous to re-charging a battery that has not been used for some time. The
same phenomenon may well be observed in old Omnibooks, if they have any
electrolytic capacitors.

While I am writing, I would like to put out a general call for a 16-bit
PCMCIA / USB 1.1 adapter. I have searched the net and eBay for a week but
have not been able to find one.

My word, Kevin...Moribund? Shame on you - It's called _'hibernating'_
- just waiting for a new spring. <VBG>

OK, with - finally- those new (old hat) netbooks finally popping up, WE are
the ones that survived the long winter on our OB's, and know what those
things really should do. Evolution apparently finally caught up after 15
years, with ASUS reviving the concept that HP discarded, (Although PSION
tried to keep alive with it's NetBook, but the CE handheld concept requires
it's own hackers, e.g. on http://www.hpcfactor.com et al. - and oh yes, we
run Linux on our HP Jornada's now, and our NEC 900C's handhelds )

And still - running a lean DSL Linux on an OB800CT with refurbished
batteries and a 4GB CF card in lieu of a hard disk, ( Total refurbish cost
about $40) keeps it well up with the new netbooks. Now why doesn't my pop-up
mouse work yet in DSL...
Anyway, I still have instant-on, now on a mixed W95/Linux system. And it
even has WIFI/WPA (under DSL that is).

Michel
PS: (still there) and still in love with good old hardware

- OB 425, 600C, 800CT 166/80MB
- 95LX, 100LX, 200LX, 700LX
- Jornada 720 with Jlime linux, Nec 900C with cmonex rom and/or jlime
henchman linux
- more older antiques waiting for display room: Epson PX-8 etc...

PPS: Oh yes, my first PC ( really Personal Computer) was the university's
DEC PDP-8 in a corner of the computer center of the Math building.
wholly personal, with big 8KB of memory, a real teletype ASR-33 for input
and output, and with real DecTape random access storage to load FOCAL.
In 1972 much better than the faster CDC/Cyber; no waiting in line, punching
cards and waiting for the batch output...
Oh, those memories of REAL cut-and-paste (papertape FYI).....
( I don't miss any of it though, there are so much new toys to play with, or
old toys to keep alive for a 57 year old hacker....)

PPPS: Finally - coming back to the OB425: Where elsewhere do we find a real
PC running on 4 AA's?
and with those new 3000mAh AA NiMh batteries it runs forever.
And my OB800 now has a 4400mAh Li-Ion now....

Hi

I would like to thank Reed Turner and Christopher Erickson for their
advice. I will go straight down to the computer shop and get a
Cardbus / USB card.

The help given by members of the Omnibook list is quite invaluable.
When the web site comes alive again, I will have to download all the
manuals, so I can "upgrade" to Win98SE or Ubuntu and use the USB card.

"Modern" laptops may be OK, but the keyboard and form factor have
allowed me to work with my 600 on shaky regional trains. This is
worth much more than fancy graphics and ability to use the latest windoze
GUI.
