Hi

The standard technique for radio hams when confronted with an old
piece of equipment with valves (tubes) is to use a Variac and connect
it to low voltage for a day or two, then increase the voltage slowly
to full value.

This gives old, dry electrolyctic capacitors time to "re-form" -
which is analogous to re-charging a battery that has not been used
for some time. The same phenomenon may well be observed in old
Omnibooks, if they have any electrolytic capacitors.

While I am writing, I would like to put out a general call for a
16-bit PCMCIA / USB 1.1 adapter. I have searched the net and eBay for
a week but have not been able to find one.

Yours
