Well, here goes:
( This assumes that you have an 80MB OB800. If less memory, read the forums
to run 'lowram' !!)
Get hold of DSL from
http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/ esp:
via
http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/download.html
from one of the mirrors /current directory, download
a) get the ISO to run on several systems with bootable CD, and burn it
first,
or get the dsl-4.2.5-embedded.zip , for example from
ftp://ftp.oss.cc.gatech.edu/pub/linux/distributions/damnsmall/current/dsl-4.2.5-embedded.zip
if all you want is to run it on your OB (and have an embedded bochs version
on your PC)
Copy three files from the CD or embedded zip to
the root of your OB800 C: drive
- linux24 - the kernel
- minirt24.gz - base boot image
- the directory \knoppix, containing the knoppix cloop disk image, (note:
The directory plus containg knoppix)
get loadlin.exe, e.g. from www.belxs.com/michel/download/LOADLIN.EXE
get a file 'options.txt' from www.belxs.com/michel/download/options.txt
containing the following:
-----------------------------------------------
linux24
root=/dev/ram
rw
initrd=minirt24.gz
vga=788
noagp
quiet
xmodule=fbdev
ramdisk_size=100000
init=/etc/init
lang=su
-----------------------------------------------
EDIT THE LAST LINE TO REFLECT YOUR KEZBOARD SETTING <g>
DELETE IF YOU HAVE A US KEYBOARD. ( Mine appears to be finnish)
Put in a normal PS-2 mouse.
Escape to DOS
Enter
> loadlin @options.txt and yes, it woiks. Happy testing
To configure for a serial mouse etc:
press CTRL-Backspace to kill the xserver and run xsetup.sh from the
commandprompt.
choose:
xfbdev server
USB mouse no
IMPS2mouse no
choose # buttons on serial mouse
choose your keymap
after exit, enter 'startx'
For browsing use Dillo! Firefox will run after 30 secs or so.
If you do not need the advanced features, Dillo is about 10 times faster on
an OB800 than Firefox.
Firefox will run well though, albeit slow
Cheers,
Michel
